An unmanned aerial vehicle in flight

The Challenge

Accurately measuring altitude is crucial for drones (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAVs). Traditional radar altimeters are typically only good enough for slower vehicles in hover and landing applications. The demand for solutions that could work at high speeds and low altitudes with precise tracking led to the creation of the Roke Miniature Radar Altimeter (MRA), a compact, high-performance, and affordable solution.

The Approach

Roke specialises in developing high performance, low size, weight and power (SWaP) RF systems allowing us to create a powerful solution designed to provide accurate altitude measurements in the toughest environmental conditions. The MRA is built with advanced algorithms and non-proprietary connections, making it easy to integrate with different air platforms.

Roke’s MRA has demonstrable and proven performance at altitudes from just 20cm to 100 meters and can handle horizontal speeds up to 300 m/s, providing accurate readings in fast, dynamic flight conditions. The inclusion of an advanced data output format and increased update rates allows the platform to respond swiftly to changes in altitude. The MRA's compact size includes an integrated antenna, making it significantly smaller than traditional radar altimeters. Its compact size supports small, variable speed, variable altitude UAS.

THE OUTCOME

The Roke MRA is the smallest and lightest radar altimeter in its class, making it ideal for both manned and unmanned platforms, including fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. It’s easy to install, mount and integrate.

Although designed for defence applications, the MRA has proven its versatility across multiple use cases, including commercial roles like crop spraying and pipeline surveying. It has even successfully been to Mars. The Roke MRA continues to set new standards in radar altimetry, offering unmatched performance and reliability for air platforms globally.
