The Challenge

Our LOCATE system uses cutting edge algorithms and techniques at a Strategic Level, to allow for wideband intercept across the HF spectrum. It applies Adaptive Digital Beamforming (ADBF) and Super Resolution Direction Finding (SRDF) technologies to plot accurate transmission geolocation on a global scale. We identified a requirement to create a mobile extension of the system which could be deployed quickly in order to support the operational needs of commanders and their units in complex environments.

The Approach

LOCATE-T is a team-based mobile version of the LOCATE system, for use as a tactical baseline extension across national borders in complex environments. It utilises Near Vertical Incidence Skywave propogation (NVIS) to allow HF intercept over mountain ranges and its SRDF and ADBF technologies deliver a high degree of accuracy and the ability to detect, track and prosecute multiple targets simultaneously in a tactical environment. We used the widely recognised Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm to develop the system, simultaneously producing direction finding results in both azimuth and elevation for co-channel signals. LOCATE-T also integrates with our strategic LOCATE and tactical RESOLVE systems, and can be fully networked to provide shared monitoring and accurate geolocation of both strategic and tactical targets.

THE OUTCOME

LOCATE-T is an advanced mobile Electronic Support capability, proven in complex environments that can be deployed by a team of two in just 40 minutes. With comprehensive training and support, it delivers a step-change in transportable Communications Intelligence (COMINT) capability. It also utilises SRDF and ADBF technologies, which allows for NVIS, direction finding. This unique capability meets operational needs, and enables flexible operation from tactically deployed semi-mobile and static positions as a transportable COMINT system for use within the 2-30 MHz HF band.
