Battlespace interoperability
Military users have until recently focused on operating in the physical battlespace with an emphasis on delivering kinetic effects. There is now growing acknowledgment that to achieve information advantage, militaries must seek to digitise the battlespace through the integration of new and existing information capabilities that provide enhanced interoperability, ultimately providing the operational commander with a decisive advantage through timely, assured data-derived insights.
Understanding the operational environment
In an era of constant competition, it is more important than ever that military commanders are provided the means to make sense of the operational environment through the collection of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) data. This can then be disseminated to the point-of-need to provide an information advantage.
Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) technologies are evolving at a rate not experienced before, presenting both opportunities and threats to the traditional ways of operating. COTS technologies are more affordable, require less power, and integrate and fuse data to perform tasks traditionally performed by bespoke military hardware. Advances in data analytics, artificial intelligence, automation and visualisation tools will afford flexible ISR solutions.
The opportunity COTS technologies present must be balanced with a comprehension of the nuances of military environment. This challenges includes security aspects, operating in environments where enabling technologies such as GPS cannot be taken for granted, combined with the physical realities of harsh military operating environments and how they interface with our legacy platforms.
